8. Vignetting

First let's check how the Nikkor Z 28-75 mm f/2.8 deals with vignetting on the smaller APS-C/DX sensor and with JPEG files. Appropriate thumbnails you can find below.

In the Nikon Z7 body it is possible to switch vignetting correction off and we did that exactly for the purposes of our test so the JPEG files presented above aren't automatically corrected. We also were able to switch off distortion correction so vignetting results for JPEG files are, within the measurement error, the same as for RAW files; that's why we are going to describe just one kind of files in our test.

When it comes to the APS-C/DX sensor there are basically no problems at all. At 28 mm and by f/2.8 brightness loss in the frame corners amounts to just 10% (−0.31 EV) and it decreases to an imperceptible value of 7% (−0.20 EV), on stopping down the aperture to f/4.0.

In the middle of the focal range the results are very similar: by f/2.8 vignetting amounts to 11% (−0.33 EV), and by f/4.0 it is just 6% (−0.17 EV).

A bit higher results you see at 75 mm where, at the maximum relative aperture, this aberration gets to 17% (−0.54 EV), and by f/4.0 it drops to 4% (−0.13 EV).

Still only the performance on full frame can be the real test of the Nikkor lens – appropriate thumbnails we present below.

A difficult combination of the widest angle available and f/2.8 means that 56% (−2.41 EV) of light disappears in the frame corners. It's quite a lot but still lower than 66%, the result of the Tamron 28-75 mm f/2.8 Di III RXD.

Fortunately stopping down the aperture is able to limit this aberration quite efficiently. By f/4.0 it reaches 40% (-1.47 EV), by f/5.6 it decreases to 28% (-0.93 EV), and by f/8.0 to 20% (-0.66 EV). Another slight decrease is visible by f/11.0, where vignetting amounts to 18% (-0.58 EV).

The situation in the middle of the focal range is noticeably better because at the maximum relative aperture this aberration's level reaches 31% (-1.08 EV), and by f/4.0 it decreases to 18% (-0.57). By the f/5.6 aperture and higher we got a result on a level of 13% (-0.41 EV) .

The worst performance can be observed at the 75 mm focal length, with a result amounting to as much as 58% (-2.50 EV) by f/2.8. Stopping down the lens to f/4.0 decreases vignetting to 38% (-1.38 EV) and by f/5.6 this aberration amounts to 24% (-0.80 EV). By f/8.0 and f/11.0 we got, respectively: 19% (-0.60 EV) and 13% (-0.41 EV).
