In a lens with such parameters it's not easy to guarantee a good performance against bright light – after all here you get quite fast aperture, a wide range of focal lengths, a lot of mobile elements inside the tube and as many as 12 groups of elements so, overall, 24 air-to-glass surfaces, every one of them a potential source of unwanted reflections.
We weren't especially surprised that the tested Nikkor didn't fare exceedingly well. Overall you can catch more flares when you stop the aperture down but when you put the sun near one corner of the frame the situation gets ugly. Light artifacts can occupy a significant part of the frame, almost always destroying our shot.
