1. Introduction

The first 85 mm f/1.4 model from the G-Master series appeared in the Sony FE system already in February 2016. As you see it's eight years old; that's why we weren't surprised hearing rumors that Sony had been preparing a successor of that one.

Sony FE 85 mm f/1.4 GM II - Introduction

On 28th August 2024 our patience was rewarded with the launch of the Sony FE 85 mm f/1.4 GM II, a lens distinctly more complex when it comes to optical system but also smaller and lighter than its predecessor.

As if it wasn't enough, the lens is also equipped with a brand new autofocus module based on two linear XD motors that are supposed to ensure a performance three times faster than the performance of the older version of this lens.

In theory everything looks fine but we always want to check everything in practice. Courtesy of the Polish subsidiary of the Sony company w were able to get one specimen of the new lens for our testing right on the day of its official launch.
