11. Summary
Pros:
- solid and weather-sealed mechanical construction,
- brilliant image quality in the frame centre up from the maximum relative aperture,
- very good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,
- good image quality on the edge of full frame,
- very good correction of longitudinal chromatic aberration,
- negligible lateral chromatic aberration,
- practically zero distortion,
- low astigmatism,
- out-of-focus areas pleasing to the eye,
- slight vignetting on the APS-C sensor,
- moderate breathing,
- fast, silent, and accurate autofocus.
Cons:
- significant vignetting on full frame.
Now, speaking about money – the suggested retail price of the tested lens amounts almost to $1800. Taking into account the fact that its much weaker predecessor not so long ago cost $1700 it's not that bad. On the other hand the rival Sigma A 85 mm f/1.4 DG DN can be bought for a much lower sum of $1030. Compared to that $1800 doesn't look that good anymore. Perhaps it would be better to wait a bit, till the novelty factor wears out and there are different special offers and cash-backs in shops – in case of Sony products such actions happen in regular intervals.
Still we have no doubts that the Sony FE 85 mm f/1.4 GM II is a much better replacement of the first version of this instrument and fully deserves our Editor's Choice badge.
