The beginning of the Nikon's Z system was untypical – the first fixed focal lenses with that mount were quite huge and relatively expensive f/1.8 models – first with 50 and 35 mm focal length, then with 85 and 24 mm focal lengths and finally the 1.8/20 devices.
Decking the classic 35 mm focal length on both sides with small and lightweight lenses but slower aperture-wise was the next step. In the middle of 2021 Nikon released the Nikkor Z 28 mm f/2.8 and, after a while, the Nikkor Z 40 mm f/2.0.
Still the system lacked classic 1.4/35 parameters. The situation changed in June 2024 when we saw the Z 35 mm f/1.4 model. I admit its relatively simple optical construction and an affordable price was a surprise. Currently it can be bought for about $600, an amount of money $100 lower than the one you have to pay for the Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1.8 S, presented much earlier.
