10. Autofocus and focus breathing

Autofocus

The focusing mechanism of this lens when joined with the Nikon Z7 camera is completely noiseless but only moderately fast. Running through the whole distance range and confirming the focus, no matter from what end you start, takes about 0.7-0.8 of a second.

When it comes to the accuracy of the autofocus you can describe it in superlatives only. The lens practically didn't miss one single time, no matter whether we took photos in our studio or outside.

We didn't notice any problems with the front or back focus tendencies either.

Focus breathing

Focus breathing tests show refraiming images as you oversharp them. We conduct the test by manually passing from the minimum focusing ditance to infinity with the aperture stopped down; then we check how the field of view of the lens changed as a result.

A change of the frame ranging from 0 to 5% we consider to be low. Between 5 and 10% we can speak about a medium level. Usually these are also maximum values compensation algorithms, present in some bodies, can effectively deal with. A high level constitute results between 10 and 15%, more than 15% means a very high level.

Like in the case of the Nikkor Z 50 mm f/1.4, also here breathing is untypical and intermittent. If you compare just extreme positions then you find out that during oversharpening the content of the frame changes by about 2%. Still the description of this phenomenon is not complete because after passing from infinity to the minimum focusing distance the frame first 'shrinks' by about 3% and then 'expands' by about 1%. After adding these two values you get the 2%, mentioned earlier. You still speak about values considered to be low so in practical situations the tested lens shouldn't have any problems with focus breathing but such a pulsating character of this aberration remains a bit strange and untypical.
