4. Image resolution

Testing the EF 2.0/100 USM model we complained a bit about its weak maximum relative aperture performance. In the case of the 100 mm Macro such a situation doesn’t exist. The graph below shows that even by f/2.8 the image quality is excellent and the resolution reaches even 39 lpmm. It means the picture quality doesn’t limit us here and choosing an aperture we can be guided only by the required depth of field. From the maximum relative aperture to the sharpest f/5.6 aperture the resolution improves by just a few percent so it will be difficult to notice the difference.

The frame edge performance deserves a lot of praise too. Even by f/2.8 the image quality is excellent there. In general, at all apertures the frame edge picture quality differs only slightly from that of the frame centre. A standing ovation!
