- very solid barrel and high build quality,
- simply sensational image quality at all focal lengths and apertures in the frame centre and on the edge alike,
- well-corrected chromatic aberration,
- low astigmatism,
- excellent work of autofocus.
Cons:
- noticeable vignetting at the maximum relative aperture,
- slight flares with the work against bright light.
This lens is a perfect example of a situation in which engineers and designers had more to say than accountants. If we start from an assumption that we don’t have to worry about the price and dimensions too much because a professional will understand that good optics must be expensive and must weigh a bit, we get a device in the style of the Nikkor 14-24 mm. It is perhaps the best wideangle lens we have dealt with so far. Excellent parameters, simply outstanding image sharpness, perfect build quality, efficient and accurate autofocus and only two minor flaws – it is probably the best way to summarize what you get if you buy the Nikkor. In fact this instrument is a must-have for every owner of professional, high-end Nikon reflex cameras who also needs a really wide angle instrument for his/her work.
