8. Vignetting

Although the Pentax 1.8/50 is a lens designed for an APS-C/DX sensor, its dimensions are similar to those of its full frame equivalents. We didn’t expect any serious vignetting problems and the reality check is below – have a glance at those thumbnails.

Pentax smc DA 50 mm f/1.8 - Vignetting

At the maximum relative aperture the lens loses 26% of light in the corners (-0.85 EV) and it is a moderate result. On stopping down the aperture to f/2.0 the situation hardly improves because the vignetting decreases just by about 1%. Only applying f/2.8 makes the problem disappear because that aberration is just 7% (-0.21 EV).

Looking at the data from the chart below you can notice easily that the Pentax compares very favourably with its full frame competitors. The only lens which fares slightly better is the full frame and physically big Canon. Both Nikkors and the Sony are worse hands down.
