Canon EF 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

10. Autofocus

The tested lens is equipped with an ultrasonic Ring USM motor; because of that the lens’s work is very quiet, practically noiseless. However when it comes to the speed we are not impressed – running through the whole distance scale and finding the focus takes about 0.7-0.8 of a second. Still you can always make use of the focus limiter, choosing the 3 meters-infinity range. In that case the mechanism speeds up noticeably and the whole operation takes already about 0.3 of a second.

The accuracy of the autofocus should be praised a lot for a change. In studio conditions we didn’t get one single miss, imagine that! It is a truly sensational result.

The Canon 100-400L II didn’t have any front or back focus tendency and this statement concerns all focal lengths and all cameras used in our test (the 50D, the 5D MkIII and the 1Ds MkIII).
