10. Autofocus

The Sigma’s C 1.4/30 DN autofocus is noiseless. Running through the whole distance range and locking onto the focus takes about 0.6 of a second. It is not a record time but it would be difficult to have any reservations either.

When it comes to the accuracy we didn’t have one single miss while testing it in studio – it seems the Sigma performs really well in well-lit conditions. When it is darker, though, and you deal with scenes of lower contrast, it sometimes have to “hunt” for the proper position; still it must be observed that the lens quickly returns to the right point. Of course in such a case the whole process lasts longer but it makes it impossible to take a completely blurry photo.

When the lens was attached to the Olympus E-PL1 it seemed to have a very slight back focus tendency. That effect was visible only at the minimum focusing distance. In the case of the Olympus E-M10 there were no problems whatsoever.
