7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

As long as you use the smaller APS-C sensor you don’t have to think about coma at all. When you progress to the corner of full frame the situation changes. At the shortest focal length the problems are quite pronounced. A bit lower coma level can be observed at 40 mm and in the 70-105 mm range there are no longer any coma-related issues.

The performance is very similar to that of the Sigma 24-105 mm OS and the cheaper Canon 24-105 mm STM. The new lens seems to be a bit better than its predecessor which showed traces of coma already in the APS-C corners.

When it comes to astigmatism, understood as an average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values, it amounted to 10.5% which means its level is on a borderline between low and medium values. In fact, during the test we noticed huge difference between the shorter focal lengths, where that aberration was low, and the longer end of the focal lengths spectrum where, at 70 mm, it reached 14.2% and at 105 mm it went as high as 15.7% so could be placed on a borderline high and medium level.

The blur areas don’t look that bad for a zoom lens. The circles aren’t especially truncated by vignetting and the light spread in them seems to be more or less even. You can find some local extreme points inside but they aren’t especially distinct. The rim becomes more and more intensive when you stop the lens down.
