1. Introduction

March 2021 has seen a real Sony offensive when it comes to new lenses. First, they released a new fast standard, the Sony FE 50 mm f/1.2 GM, one week later adding three compact G series lenses, the 24, 40, and 50 mm focal lengths, to their line-up; among them the device with the widest angle of view is as fast as f/2.8 and these with longer focal lengths feature f/2.5 apertures.

Sony FE 40 mm f/2.5 G - Introduction

All these lenses share some features:small but sturdy barrels, the same filter size, and the XD autofocus mechanism, based on two motors. Despite moderate sizes their casings have a lot of switches and rings that enhance their functionality.

We want to start presenting the trio of newest devices with the 2.5/40 one – in the following chapters you can find results of our test and also our impressions concerning optical and mechanical properties of that lens.

We would like to thank Sony for delivering us the final specimen of the tested lens even before its official launch – that move allowed us to test it very quickly.

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
