3. Build quality

The Micro 4/3 system doesn't lack of fast 17-25 mm lenses so we didn't have any problems with collating the following chart. It's clear the OM 1.4/20 is a lens significantly smaller and physically lighter than faster 17 and 25 mm models but it is bigger and heavier than all three Panasonic lenses, presented in this chart. Small wonder – the OM 1.4/20 is optically more complex than all these three and additionally faster than two of them.

In the following photo the OM System M.Zuiko Digital 20 mm f/1.4 PRO is positioned between the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f/1.8 and the Voigtlander Nokton 25 mm f/0.95.

The M.Zuiko 20 mm f/1.4 PRO starts wit a metal mount and a rear element, 20 mm in diameter. The element doesn't move and is situated on the same level as the contacts, with well blackened edges and area around it. The black part with a contact plate features also information that the lens was produced in Japan. Overall from this side everything looks very well and the lens seems to be completely weather-sealed.

The proper body of the lens, made completely of metal, starts with an immobile ring with a red dot, making an alignment with a camera easier, and a name and parameters of the model right above it. On the side opposite to the red dot you also get information about splash proof properties of the lens, its minimum focusing distance (0.25m/0.82ft), its serial number, and the logo of the Micro 4/3 system.

Further on you see a manual focus ring, 29 mm wide, without any distance or DOF scale. The ring is a focus-by-wire construction and it moves very smoothly. Running through its entire distance range takes a turn through an angle of over 120 degrees – such a value ensures very precise settings.

Then you see an immobile part of the barrel with an inscription stating the name and parameters of the lens along with two stripes, blue and dark silver. Right behind them there is a mount for attaching a petal-type hood and a non-rotating filter thread, 58 mm in diameter.

The front element of the lens doesn't move, it's almost flat, and its diameter amounts to 28 mm. It is situated very shallowly inside the barrel but round it you can find well-matted, dark, and ribbed parts.

When it comes to optical construction you deal here with 11 elements positioned in 10 groups and there are plenty of special elements among them. You get two Super HR elements, two aspherical ones, and, finally, as many as four elements produced of low dispersion glass (three ED and one Super ED). Inside there is also a round aperture with nine blades that can be closed down to a value of f/16 at the maximum.

Buyers get in the box with the lens: both caps, a petal-type hood, and a soft case.
