Sony FE 135 mm f/1.8 GM
10. Autofocus
When it comes to its speed you have to mention the fact that the task of the Sony 1.8/135 GM was very difficult in this area. Its minimum focusing distance, shorter than the distance of many rivals, amounts to just 0.7 of a meter. Despite that fact the speed of the mechanism with the lens attached to the A7R III is very good. The autofocus always goes to the right direction without any delay and its focus throw, no matter from what end you start, amounts to 0.5-0.6 of a second.
Of course there's also the focus limiter. If choose a range from 1.5 meters to infinity, the autofocus will speed up and the whole focusing won't be longer than 0.3-0.4 of a second.

How does the autofocus perform when joined with older bodies, such as the A7R II? Not bad. It's interesting that, when comparing it to the A7R III performance, we didn't notice any significant differences in speed but, sporadically, there was focus wavering, something that we didn't notice when working with the newer camera model.
Overall the accuracy and speed of the autofocus of the Sony FE 135 mm f/1.8 GM we assess very highly and we don't have any reservations in this area. Additionally, we didn't observe any distinct front or back focus tendencies.
