11. Summary

Pros:

  • good image quality in the frame centre,
  • sensible image quality on the edge of the frame at the shortest focal length,
  • slight lateral chromatic aberration,
  • properly corrected spherical aberration,
  • moderate astigmatism,
  • low vignetting on the APS-C sensor,
  • silent, efficient and quite accurate autofocus,
  • competitive price.

Cons:

  • weak image quality on the edge of the frame at longer focal lengths,
  • a bit of problems with longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • noticeable distortion with moustache deformation elements,
  • too high coma.

I have to admit the Samyang AF 24–70 mm f/2.8 FE didn't impress me with its performance. During our test we noticed too many slip-ups and medium results for a good contemporary lens with the journalistic 24-70 mm f/2.8 parameters. Mind you, its dimensions and weight are noticeably higher than those of the majority of its rivals.

As a kind of consolation, you get the price – currently the tested Samyang can be bought for about $800, noticeably less than its cheapest rival, the Sigma A 24-70 mm f/2.8 DG DN which is priced as high as over $1100. The prices of brand name lenses of this class start from $1600.

If you look at the Samyang from this perspective, your opinion might become a tad more favourable. In many situations this lens will perform quite efficiently and provide satisfactory photographic results. And you'll pay for it three times less than for many brand name instruments. Still, if you are a photographer who doesn't tolerate compromises you most probably won't be satisfied with it.
