Loyal Readers of our polish website Optyczne.pl know that I like small, shapely wide angle instruments very much. As it happens, several times a year I have an opportunity to go to photographic expeditions organized as a part of our Photomission program. We visit Lofoten, Iceland and Faroe Islands most often and in every one of these places we walk a lot because many most beautiful spots can be reached only after a long walk or even climbing a mountain. As you can imagine, small, lightweight photographic equipment is really something you appreciate during such trips.
That's why when I heard about another launch in the segment of small, ultra wide angle fixed focal length lenses I was overjoyed. In May 2023 Fujifilm prestented the 8 mm f/3.5 lens which, on the APS-C sensor, is able to provide a truly impressive field of view, reaching as much as 121 degrees. The aperture fastness is not great, meaning you deal with a typical instrument for landscape or architecture photography; in such cases you stop down the aperture significantly anyway. Still you get a relatively small lens, weighing just 215 grams; what's more, with this device you can use classic filters with a quite moderate diameter, amounting to just 62 mm.
It all sounded so well that I was very keen on borrowing one specimen of that lens for testing purposes. After approaching the Polish subsidiary of Fujifilm Polska I was sent one; the results of our tests you can find in the following chapters – enjoy your lecture!
