8. Vignetting

First, let’s check the vignetting level on the smaller APS-C sensor – appropriate thumbnails can be found below.

A7R II, APS-C, f/2.8	A7R II, APS-C, f/4.0

Small dimensions and a wide angle of view mean the vignetting is visible even on the smaller detector. By f/2.8 we got a result of 36% (−1.31 EV), which is a high value for a full frame device. By f/4.0 the vignetting decreases to 22% (−0.73 EV), and on stopping down to f/5.6 it falls to 20% (−0.65 EV).

Here we deal with one of the highest results we have ever seen in the history of our tests. At the maximum relative aperture you lose as much as 74% of light in the frame corners (−3.87 EV). Stopping down the lens to f/4.0 helps but you still have to take into account a very high result, that of 57% (−2.46 EV). Also by f/5.6 and f/8.0 you won’t have any problems with noticing vignetting at all as it amounts to 51% (−2.09 EV) and 48% (−1.87 EV) respectively. Further stopping down doesn’t have any measureable influence on brightness loss values.
