Pros:
- solid, weather-sealed mechanical construction,
- good image quality in the frame centre,
- sensible image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,
- decent image quality on the edge of full frame,
- negligible lateral chromatic aberration,
- excellent astigmatism correction,
- moderate vignetting on the APS-C sensor,
- very good performance against bright light,
- sensible work of autofocus.
Cons:
- monstrous vignetting on full frame,
- distinct distortion of moustache variety.
I understand that the C series follows its own rules – giving up distortion and vignetting correction was supposed to allow to correct other aberration better and guarantee small physical dimensions and weight. Still, in this particular case, Sigma went one step too far. I can understand 2-3 EV vignetting but if it exceeds 4 EV I become sceptical. Apart from that, if the producer decided not to correct distortion they at least could make sure there would be no moustache distortion present.
To sum up: too many compromises, too few outstanding results, and a very strong rival will make life difficult for this lens.
