11. Summary

Pros:

  • excellent image quality in the frame centre,
  • very good image quality on the edge of the frame,
  • negligible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • imperceptible lateral chromatic aberration,
  • lack of any noticeable problems with spherical aberration,
  • low astigmatism,
  • sensibly looking out-of-focus areas,
  • excellent performance against bright light,
  • silent, quick, and accurate autofocus,
  • good price/performance ratio.

Cons:

  • a bit too high coma,
  • significant focus breathing.
A comparison between the tested Sigma and the Fujinon XF 23 mm f/1.4 R LM WR should be the most important piece of news in our summary. Without doubt the Sigma has nothing to be ashamed of. It is true that it provides a bit lower resolution near the maximum relative aperture and also a noticeably higher coma level but it is balanced by a better distortion correction, lower astigmatism, lower vignetting, and, finally, a better performance against bright light. All of this for about $500 (or $550 with Sony E mount), so almost $400 less than the price of the Fujinon.

At the other end of the price scale you find the Viltrox AF 23 mm f/1.4 XF with a price tag of $300 but this lens is able to offer you a tad better resolution in the centre after a stronger stopping down and lower distortion. Still, its flaws are significant: weak resolution on the edge of the frame or really big coma.

As a result from this group of three instruments it's the Sigma that seems to be the best choice when it comes to price/performance ratio. All these arguments made us award the tested lens our 'Editor's Choice' badge. It's true that its list of flaws has two positions but there is focus breathing among them. We have introduced that category quite recently and we didn't apply it to tests of the Sigma's direct rivals.
