11. Summary
Pros:
- Excellent image quality in the frame centre,
- Good image quality on the edge of the sensor,
- Imperceptible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
- Slight lateral chromatic aberration,
- Lack of any serious distortion problems,
- Negligible astigmatism,
- Very low coma,
- Moderate vignetting,
- Noiseless, quick, and accurate autofocus,
- Excellent performance against bright light.
Cons:
- Higher distortion level than that of its rivals.
The price is another matter. The new Canon currently can be bought for $350 so it costs substantially more than the Nikkor AF-S DX Micro 40 mm f/2.8G. Of course the presence of stabilization and LED lights compensate for that difference a bit but still it remains noticeable. We hope that, after a period of imposing ‘the novelty tax’, Canon will lower it a tad.
